# 6.1 Token Fundamentals

The native token of the Xera protocol is XERA.\
It serves as the settlement asset for payments, the fee token for network transactions, and the incentive unit for infrastructure providers. The total supply of XERA is permanently fixed at 1,000,000,000 tokens, with no mechanism for additional issuance. This hard cap guarantees predictable monetary behavior and prevents dilution over time.

All supply accounting is enforced at the consensus layer. Even though shielded transactions conceal addresses and amounts, they do not alter the global supply of XERA. Every unit entering or exiting the shielded pool remains fully verifiable, ensuring that privacy does not undermine monetary integrity. XERA can be subdivided into smaller units, enabling microtransactions and high-frequency usage across mobile wallets, applications, and business workflows.
